Serhii Kaharlytskyi cleans the rubble in his ruined home in Kyiv, Ukraine, Tuesday, Jan. 10. 2023. Serhii lost his wife Iryna Kaharlytska during the latest Russian attack on Kyiv's tranquil Solomianskyi district on Dec. 31. For Serhii Kaharlytskyi, a 42-year-old Kyiv carpenter, his ruined home’s kitchen stands at the center of his family’s traumatic memories of Russia’s war in Ukraine. Kaharlytskyi and his 10-year-old son had a narrow escape when a Russian missile landed outside on New Year’s Eve as they watched television together. Iryna wasn’t so lucky. She was in the kitchen preparing a meal. She didn’t survive.
